With the water issues we are experiencing in Johannesburg what would be the better solution - a water backup (Jojo tanks) or a borehole? If anyone has experience with these please assist?

The water backup is probably the cheapest, quickest and easiest of the two options.
A water backup is cheap (R12 000 to R20 000) as it is just holding tanks that essentially store water from your municipal supply and pumps it into your house. It would be a tank and a pump. Some people put a filter in as well.
A borehole is pretty expensive and you need to ensure that you will hit water when you drill - you need space to locate the water. It will need to be extensively filtered. The one advantage is that you can irrigate your garden and fill your pool cheaply thereafter.
Hope this helps
